Chapter 7

Skullduggery

“Thanks, Angela. I really appreciate this.” She handed Robbie to her sister and slung his diaper bag onto her shoulder.

Angela grunted at the transfer of weight. “No problem. Though I don’t get why you don’t just drop him off at Mom’s.”

“Because Rob is helping me move Luke’s Christmas gift into the shop, and I gave Luke the SUV to divert suspicion. And I didn’t think it was a good idea to have mom’s old boyfriend show up at the house.”

Angela laughed. “Ah, yes. Super-secret Christmas skullduggery. I swear, you enjoy that more than Christmas. But really, Emily? Another bike? How many does he need?”

“Different bikes are for different types of riding. He used to have three, but had to sell two to pay for the immigration flap.”

“And you bought back his old bike? It doesn’t make sense to me, but then I’m not a motorcycle momma like you are.”

“Get out, and don’t spoil my son too much.”

“Oh no. It’s an aunt’s privilege to spoil her nephew. Robbie? Ice cream?”

“’Scream, ’scream,” he said excitedly.

“I’m beset on all sides. Mom. You. If he grows as big as a house, it’ll be your and Mom’s fault.” Angela chuckled. “Come on, Robbie. Let’s go spoil you rotten.”

Emily shut the door after Angela and Robbie and washed the dishes before Rob arrived.

It had been a week since she’d bought the bike and she had to get it out of the dealership. The bike store would have delivered it, but she needed to control the time when she could slip it into the storage of Luke’s shop. Luke planned to go to Mrs. Diggerty’s house today to help with small repairs. This gave her an opportunity to steal into the shop secretly. She figured she could just park it and cover it like the other stored bikes. On Christmas, she’d manufacture a reason for Luke and her to go the garage and surprise him with his present.

Just as she finished washing the last glass, her phone rang. Emily answered the unfamiliar number.

“Hi, Emily,” said a gravely voice. “This is Oakie.”

“Hi. How are things?”

“Fine. I was wondering on the progress of the Christmas party for tonight.”

“Great. Luke closed shop early. I have the food nailed down. Luke and I put the decorations up last night.”

“That’s good. How much is it going to cost?”

She gave him the number and he grunted. “That’s fine,” he replied, but his voice was hesitant.

“Is there a problem?”

“No. Not with the party. I was wondering if Luke’s around. He’s not answering his phone.”

“He's running errands. I’m sure he’s driving and doesn’t want to answer.”

“Emily, I hate to ask this, but I’ve heard disturbing news.”

“What’s that, Oakie?”

“I heard Luke’s hanging with the Rojos.”

“The Rojos? I’m sorry, but that idea’s simply crazy.”

“I know Luke hasn’t been happy with the Spawn since that mess a couple years back. And I suppose he has every right to be.”

“Oakie, if you have concerns you should discuss them with him. He certainly hasn’t said anything to me. I
